What is Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012?

Time to move from a strong ERP to a modern platform

Compared with AX 2009, Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 brought a much more advanced architecture, a role-based user interface and a wider set of modules, and for many years it was one of Microsoft's flagship ERP solutions. For many organisations running complex processes such as manufacturing, finance, project management and logistics, AX 2012 is still a system that is "strong but worn out".

The biggest advantage of AX 2012 is its broad functionality and its high degree of customisation. But that very power to customise can, over the years, turn into a complex, hard-to-manage and fragile system. Unnecessary development, poorly documented modules and solutions that depend on one person are among the most common problems in AX 2012 projects.

Microsoft has also ended mainstream support for AX 2012, which brings this version to a strategic decision point. Limited security patches, difficulty integrating with new technologies and rising maintenance costs inevitably push companies to look for a new platform.

What does Dynamics 365 offer at this point?

Microsoft Dynamics 365 combines the business knowledge and process maturity that AX 2012 has built up over the years with a modern, cloud-based and continuously updated platform. One of the most important differences is that Dynamics 365 is modular and scalable. It grows with the company's needs and removes unnecessary complexity.

Dynamics 365 also goes beyond AX 2012 with

  • current security standards
  • advanced reporting with Power BI
  • low-code development with Power Platform
  • natural integration with Microsoft 365

and similar advantages.

Here too, one point needs underlining:

Moving from AX 2012 to Dynamics 365 is not a "product change" but a change of approach. The right strategy is to keep the strengths of the existing system and leave the unnecessary baggage behind.
