Where does the problem start, and how can it be solved with the right management?
ERP projects are among the most complex transformation projects in technology. An ERP project is not just a software installation. It requires ways of working, habits and decision-making to change at the same time. That is why many ERP projects struggle to go as planned.
The difficulty rarely comes down to a single cause. On the customer side, common situations are that the pressure of daily operations leaves too little time for the project, decisions take too long, or users find it hard to adapt to change. The expected benefit from the system is delayed and the project starts to slow down.
On the software and system side, excessive customisation, poorly planned integrations or a badly designed data structure can make the ERP complicated. Powerful software that is not managed well can become a burden for its users.
On the implementation partner and project management side, a scope that is not clearly defined, unrealistic timelines and incomplete documentation make the project fragile. When these come together, the ERP project gets labelled a "failure".
Yet more often than not, the problem lies not in the system itself but in how the project is managed. Stopping at the right point to take a fresh look at the process, clarifying priorities and managing the project calmly can get the ERP working again. An ERP project does not have to be reset. With the right approach, it can be brought back into balance.
