What is Microsoft Dynamics 365?

A modern, sustainable ERP approach that is ready for the future

Microsoft Dynamics 365 is the platform with which Microsoft redefined its classic view of ERP: a modern business applications platform that is cloud-based, modular and continuously updated. Positioned as the successor to Dynamics AX, it is more than an ERP product. It brings finance, operations, sales, customer relationships and analytics together in a single ecosystem.

The main difference between Dynamics 365 and earlier generations of ERP is that it is a living platform rather than a fixed, closed system. Because the underlying platform is updated continuously, companies can stay current without new-version projects, major upgrades or system downtime.

What does Dynamics 365 offer?

Dynamics 365 has a modular structure that can be shaped around different business needs. Areas such as Finance & Operations, Supply Chain Management, Sales, Customer Service and Project Management can be brought in as they are needed. So instead of growing the ERP so that it "covers everything", companies can extend it in a controlled way.

Another important advantage is its natural integration with the Microsoft ecosystem. Advanced reporting with Power BI, low-code application development with Power Platform and a fit with what users already know from Microsoft 365 are strong points that set Dynamics 365 apart from classic ERP systems.

How does it differ from AX 2009 and AX 2012?

Microsoft Dynamics AX 2009 and AX 2012 were strong solutions in their day, but they fall short of today's expectations on speed, security and integration. The end of their support periods in particular has brought these versions to a strategic decision point.

Dynamics 365, with its

  • cloud-based architecture
  • current security standards
  • flexible scalability
  • simpler, more user-friendly interface

removes these limitations.

There is one critical point, though:

Moving to Dynamics 365 does not mean wiping everything and starting again. With the right approach, the existing AX investment can be protected, the processes that work can be carried over and unnecessary baggage can be left behind.

For a closer look at the limitations of AX 2009 today and why it is no longer enough, see our post

Who is Dynamics 365 the right choice for?

  • Companies whose ERP is live but not delivering value
  • Organisations on AX 2009 or AX 2012 that are looking for a sustainable way forward
  • Managers who want to win back users who have gone back to Excel
  • Businesses that want their ERP to be a decision support tool rather than a burden

With proper planning and a simple migration strategy, Dynamics 365 is not a "new ERP project". It becomes the next stage of your existing investment.
